Sustainable Transformer Project

Sustainable Transformer Project

The project aims at carrying out the studies and tests required to confirm the technical feasibility and economic impact of the replacement of the mineral oil currently used (400kV voltage levels) as insulating and refrigerating element of this type of machines; which is highly polluting, classified as a hazardous and highly flammable substance, by a biodegradable vegetable oil which is more sustainable and environment-friendly.

Impact:

The factory tests of a transformer of conventional design (with modifications taking into account the lowest possible economic impact) with vegetable oil have been carried out, obtaining positive results and validating its use.

Period:

This project is in progress. It started on November 2015 and is scheduled for completion in July 2017.

Benefits for the electricity system:

The use of a sustainable transformer offers a number of advantages, mainly due to its biodegradability and low flash point.

For each transformer that benefits from the results of the project, it translates into a lower cost in waste management, eliminating constructive needs in new facilities such as waterproofing of trenches and fires walls and reduction of fire risk premiums and a reduction of fines for dumping in the event of an incident.
