PRICE project

PRICE project

The ‘PRICE’ project (Joint Smart Grid Project in the Corredor del Henares area of the Community of Madrid) is the first-of-its-kind project for the deployment of demand-side management mechanisms in which more than 1,000 households in the Corredor del Henares area are participating and which is serving to test how citizens can be more actively involved in the electricity system.

Action:

The main objectives of the PRICE project are active demand-side management, the integration of the demand of the electric vehicle and raising awareness of final consumers on intelligent demand-side management, through new channels of information, favouring a more efficient and responsible use of energy. In order to achieve this, during the trial phase, households in the Corredor del Henares are receiving information about their consumption and the electricity system so as to be able to make decisions on how they consume energy.

Specifically, in this trail phase involving 2,000 households, of which 1,000 have a cellphone application to display their consumption and receive information on the status of the system (informative data/alerts), some of them have air conditioning units that can be managed remotely by the system operator (technical operational orders) as well as through the cellphone application, and another 1,000 will serve as a control group. In addition, there are 5 electric vehicles, which together with smart recharging points, will be used for testing manageability and user experience. One of these vehicles is readily available for use by Red Eléctrica.

The PRICE deployment project has received the European Electricity Grid Initiative Core Label that acknowledges the alignment of the project with the criteria and objectives defined in the European Electricity Grid Initiative.

Period:

The project was completed in 2015.

In collaboration with:

The project is led by Iberdrola Distribución and Unión Fenosa Distribución and aims to respond to the technological challenges existing across the world and that electricity systems currently face. PRICE also has the participation of Red Eléctrica de España and a group of industrial and IT suppliers, research centres and universities.

Benefits to the electricity system:

This project is an innovative solution that will allow Red Eléctrica to:

  • Promote the knowledge and research of potential measures to provide flexibility to the system leveraging the deployment of smart meters.
  • Analyse the behavior and response of end users to informative data sent and orders that require action, as well as the impact on their day-to-day life and on the system.
  • Test the functionalities implemented with the aim of integrating mobile and dispersed loads into the grid and analyse charging patterns of the electric vehicles.
