Demand for electrical energy falls 0.9% in March

The demand for electrical energy on the Spanish peninsula in the month of March, after having factored in the seasonal and working patterns, fell 0.9% with respect to the same month last year. Gross demand for the month was 20,748 GWh, a value 2.2% below the figure for March 2013.

In the first quarter of the year, and after having factored in the seasonal and working patterns, consumption was 0.6% less than last year. The demand for electrical energy in this period stood at 63,146 GWh, down 1.8% on the same period in 2013.

New wind power record

On 25 March, a new all-time high was reached for daily wind power energy in the peninsular electricity system, with a value of 352,087 MWh. This new record represents an increase of 2.1% above the previous record set on 16 January 2013, which was 345,011 MWh.

Production coming from wind power during the month reached 5,115 GWh, 11% lower than the same period last year, and represented 24.1% of the total production.

In the month of March, generation coming from renewable energy sources reached 55.5% of production.

78.7% of electricity generation during the month was obtained using technologies which produce zero CO2 emissions.
