Sole Spanish company chosen by the Natural Capital Leaders Index 2014
Red Eléctrica, distinguished as a leading company in natural capital efficiency

Red Eléctrica de España has been distinguished as a leading company in natural capital efficiency in the Utilities sector by the Natural Capital Leaders Index 2014, being the sole Spanish company selected by this index whose goal is to recognise companies that demonstrate leadership in terms of protection of natural resources and those that are pioneers in decoupling economic growth from environment impacts.

The Natural Capital Leaders Index 2014, developed by Trucost and GreenBiz, has selected 62 companies in 19 different sectors from a database that includes 4,600 of the world’s largest companies in terms of market capitalisation. These companies must be listed on a stock exchange and shall have publicly reported the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from its direct business during the last 5 years.

The Index features two categories of leaders: Natural Capital Efficiency Leaders, which selects those companies that used natural resources most efficiently to generate revenue during 2013, and Natural Capital Decoupling Leaders, that includes those companies that have increased their revenue whilst decreasing natural capital impacts over the previous 5 year period.

In the analysis performed, Red Eléctrica has proven to be an outstanding company in its category and sector for having achieved an efficient use of natural capital to generate revenue. On the whole, Red Eléctrica’s environmental impacts, which are derived from its direct operations and the Company’s supply chain, are low in relation to their revenue.

The results of this study are part of the State of Green Business Report 2014, produced since 2007 by GreenBiz and Trucost, which annually examines the trends and indicators of the leading companies on issues of corporate responsibility and their response to environmental challenges. The indicators of this report have been developed to help companies address the challenges of sustainability and understand their environmental performance over time.
